“When I took the position over in Mid-July we were already deep into events season with the 1^st PECAN eco fair taking place my fist week on the job!

Since then it’s been all go and many of you will have seen me running about the brewery on a day to day basis, or behind the bar at one of our events, which I’m pleased to say have been a great success once again, with Live at Langham in aid of the Friends of the South Downs and The South Downs National Park during August seeing some beautiful weather and really excellent acts.

I’ve learnt so much in this short period but I was amazed to hear that conkers can be used to make washing up liquid, the left overs from this year’s Bonker for Conkers have a second lease of life as soap! 

We’ve also worked with Homestart Butser, Pier Road Café, Chestnut Tree House, Midhurst foodbank and many many more during the last 6 months alone. All our events are all inclusive (we even had a cat in the taproom over summer) and I’m very excited for everything we’ve got planned during 2025.

If you’ve been into the taproom you will have noticed that things have moved around to make it more accessible and we’ve gone paperless with the till system, however my never ending search for eco-friendly toilet paper continues (hence the blog photo).

We’ve refilled over a 2000 containers with beer in the last couple of months, really cutting down on the amount of single use plastic we produce – we have also installed our new hot liquor tank (that’s just hot water for us non brewing folk) which will hugely help the brewery stay energy efficient and cut down on waste.

The first event of the year Folk Under The Fermenters promises to be an excellent night of acoustic folk with the back drop of our lovely brewery. I look forward to seeing you there.

Q: What was your route to working at Langham Brewery?
A: I live in Lodsworth just two fields away so I’ve been coming here since the Taproom opened – always loved the vibe and the good people working here.

Q: Which is your favourite Langham brew and why?
A: Cask: LSD – just a rather unique flavour and a standout versus most pub ales.
Keg: Rocket Juice – something very moreish about that one.

Q: What does a typical pre/post brewery day look like for you?
A: I run a London art event and exhibition platform – so likely behind a screen or phone.

Q: Who do you look up to and why?
A: Hmm – I’m not one for idols, but in terms of modern C20th thinkers John Rawls and John Maynard Keynes stand out – the latter in particular also led an immensely rich cultural life and was the founding chairman of Arts Council England in 1946.

Q. What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?
A: “Success is not final, failure is not fatal: It is the courage to continue that counts.”

Q: Please tell us one thing not many people know about you.
A: I was born in Rio de Janeiro and have a Brazilian passport (although I can’t speak a word of Portuguese).

Q. Would your 10-year-old self be proud of you?
A: Not sure – I don’t think he’d be that surprised!  

Q. If time and money were no object, what would you do with your life?
A: Do at least one MA at an American University; travel and collect art and artifacts… and give a bunch of it away to social/environmental causes.

Q:  If you could have one talent, what would it be?
A: Be able to mix records.

Lucy Pitts from Sussex Exclusive talks to our ‘dot-joiner in chief’, MD and co-owner, Lesley Foulkes, about casks, conkers and continuums.

Here’s an extract from the article, which you can read in full on the Sussex Exclusive website.

“At Langham Brewery, we brew three or four times a week and produce about 2,500 hectolitres of beer a year. We’ve got our five main signature beers: Session Bitter, Hip Hop, Best, Arapaho and Session IPA and we cask condition our ale, which isn’t done by many breweries anymore. It’s a process that allows a secondary fermentation in the cask creating a beer that is naturally carbonated and is not filtered or pasteurized. This really helps develop the character of the beer.

We are also very collaborative. When we developed our Arapaho beer, I contacted their heritage society and we’re still friends on Facebook. We also got approached by What3Words to work with them so we developed some beers around our words: Hence.Mute.Lizards. More recently, we collaborated with an American brewer for D-Day and we’ve just collaborated with our hop supplier to create a beer called First Swallow.”
