From field to firkin in just a few miles

A sense of place… from field to firkin in just a few miles. Locally grown on the Cowdray Estate, locally brewed at Langham Brewery.

We are proud to announce that from early next year, the principle malt we will use in our brews is from Maris Otter barley grown in the South Downs National Park, close to the brewery on the Cowdray Estate.

There is much talk in the world of whisky and wine about ‘terroir’ – ‘a sense of place’, and no two ‘terroirs’ are the same. The flavour of grape or grain is a reflection of where it is grown. In other words, our malted Maris Otter barley grown on the Cowdray Estate tastes different to Maris Otter grown on the Salisbury Plain.

The barley – whose starch content is the product of the local rainfall and the Cowdray soil – when added to our brewery water, which is also sourced locally, allows us to create flavourful beers which cannot be repeated elsewhere, even if they’re using the same yeast and hops.

So join with us in celebrating how this emphasises, quite wonderfully, the individuality of our beers. We’re so proud that we can claim ‘from field to firkin in just a few miles’.

Since our very first brew in 2006, we are proud to have brewed our award winning beers with malt from Warminster Maltings, one of only a handful of surviving traditional floor maltsters remaining in the UK, and we will proudly continue to do so.

And… talking of ‘terroir’ – our friends at Rural Strides have organised a 6.5 mile walk around the Cowdray Estate on Saturday 30th December.

Kick-start your New Year celebrations by savouring the local views, and the beauty of the sweet chestnut woods, while taking in the ‘terroir’, before raising a glass of Langhams (softs also available) in a ‘cheers to the New Year’.
