Welcome to our October Beer Of The Month: Green & Gold 4.3%.

This wonderful new beer is created using green hops that are picked directly from the field and added to the beer within hours of being harvested. The hops are used while they are still fresh and will give the beer a unique flavour and aroma; expect this brew to be light and floral, with a citrus sweetness. It will offer a satisfying bittering bite, followed by smooth spicy notes and a lingering marmalade aftertaste. Beer bliss!

This is a wonderfully collaborative brew between our head brewer James, and our (very capable) assistant brewer Fran Weston. Although a green hopped brew is a new journey for Langhams, both James and Fran have brewed with green hops in their previous roles – James at Wight Knuckle Brewery (with hops from an allotment situated 9 miles away from the brew house) and Fran while he was head brewer at Ballards Brewery.

Using the term ‘green’ also references our recent Green Tourism Award which is the industry-leading assessment framework providing a holistic review of a business’s sustainability performance based on the three key pillars of People, Place, and Planet; we were so pleased to be awarded the Gold Standard. Hence, the name of this celebratory new brew: Green & Gold. See what we did there?!

A word from our designer on his wonderfully luxurious pump clip design:
“I’ve incorporated the Green Tourism award logo on both sides, gold on one side (because you won gold) and green on the other (which is how their logo is) and then used loads of green hops and some wheat/barley to balance the colours. Then, intertwined within the whole design are the Langham swallows”.

We think it’s the perfect design combination and creates a wonderful autumnal asthetic.

Introducing our new brew: Green&Gold 4.3% 🎉

Warmly welcoming James Banks to Langham’s – our new Brewery Manager and Head Brewer.
James lives in Petersfield having moved to Sussex from the Isle of Wight where he designed, installed and was head brewer at the Wight Knuckle Brewery for George Bristow, a well-known former Lodsworth resident and previous owner/landlord of the Hollist Arms.
More recently James has been head brewer at Farnham Brewery.
James has a fabulous repertoire of exciting brews; do pop into the brewery to say hi, there’s a friendly welcome guaranteed.

Q: What got you into brewing?
A: I’ve always liked producing for others to enjoy. It started when I was really young baking on Sundays for neighbours. Brewing uses simple ingredients, but includes chemistry and biology which adds to the interest and creates some unbelievable results.

Q: Which beer was the first craft beer you brewed?
A: My first ‘all grain’ batch as a homebrewer didn’t go according to plan – a simple pale recipe became a barley wine at 8% ABV, quite pleasant with a dash of Ribena apparantly. I remember it differently!

Q: What’s your favourite pub in the UK?
A: An impossible question given the multitude of choice and changes over the years, but it would have to be a good ‘local’ wherever you currently are.

Q: If you weren’t in the brewing industry, what would you be doing?
A: Either pressing locally grown apples for juice, or campaigning/growing UK hemp for trade in all relevant sectors such as, food and beverage and the construction industries.

Q: Which is your current favourite Langham beer and why?
A: Session IPA, it’s a perfect balance between sweetness and bitterness, plus the Citra lingers nicely on the palate. It’s very flavourful for a lighter ABV, too.

Q: Who or what has influenced you the most?
A: Music continues to influence me, and has since a young age.

Q: Please tell us one thing not many people know about you.
A: At 11 years old, I really wanted to work for Panorama.

Q: What are the most important lessons you have learned so far in your life?
A: Be realistic and don’t exaggerate your abilities. Others will always see through this; often with a dim view. Don’t always take the short cuts in life.

Q: What kinds of things make you the happiest now?
A: A long undisturbed swim in the sea, a walk with unbelievable views and with a cosy pub at the end.

Q: If you could invite any 3 people (alive or dead) to enjoy a pint in the Langham Tap, which 3 would you choose?
A: Rik Mayall, Alan Watts, Siouxsie Sioux

Q: What life advice would you pass along to your younger self?
A: Don’t be so keen to try and please everyone and don’t be afraid to be yourself.

About SALSA:
Written by experienced food safety experts, SALSA is a robust and effective food safety certification scheme which is appropriate for smaller food producers and suppliers.

Approved suppliers can demonstrate that they operate to standards that are recognised and accepted across the industry and exceed the minimum standards expected by enforcement authorities.

SALSA approval is only granted to suppliers who are able to demonstrate to an auditor that they are able to produce and supply safe and legal food and are committed to continually meeting the requirements of the SALSA standard.

SALSA is a non-profit making joint venture founded by three of the main trade associations representing the UK Food Chain, featured on the right. The Institute of Food Science and Technology (IFST) oversees the running of the Scheme on behalf of the owner, Salsa Scheme Ltd, which is made up of representatives from these three trade associations. IFST also runs the professional register that verifies the competence of SALSA Auditors.

Are we all still Bonkers? Yes… For Conkers! Welcome to Bonkers For Conkers 2024.

Are you man/woman/child enough? We are reaching out to all serious sports men, women, families, children (and their dogs) to be part of our annual daredevil contest of skill and danger: Bonkers For Conkers.

Join the event at the beautiful ‘brewery in a barn’ on the Cowdray Estate, on Sunday 13th October 2024 from 1pm – 6.30pm.

There will be 2 competitions to find the junior (8 to 15 years) and senior conker champions of 2024.
World championship rules apply… and all conkers are provided by the organisers. This is serious (& very fun) stuff! £5 to play, with all proceeds to Chestnut Tree House.

There will also be (of course!) an excellent bar with our award winning ales, live music from Wavy Davy, dancing from Victory Morris, fabulous stalls, plus gifts, tombola, face painting, cake decorating and more.

So… who will win the coveted Langham Cup or get their name on the treasured junior trophy shield? Good luck (and be Bonkers For Conkers) one and all!
