A BIG welcome… and a sad goodbye: we have a new brewer at the brewery.

A great big welcome to Francis John Weston C.B.C, or Fran as he is known to friends – and the fans of his
excellent brews – when he was Head Brewer at the fabulous Ballard’s Brewery, now re-located to
Serbia (with a little help from Fran).

We are chuffed to bits and so happy that Fran has joined us at Langhams. Our friendship goes way,
way back. In fact, James and Steve (our founding brewers) spent brew days with Fran back in the
mists before Langhams was founded in 2005.

Fran was Head Brewer at Ballards for 37 years. Founded in 1980, Ballards was a 7.5 BBL brewery – just
like Langhams. In that time, Fran designed many different styles and strengths of both draught and
bottled award-winning ales which were enjoyed across the county and farther afield.

Eponymous brews are his Ballards Mild; Nyewood Gold; Wassail and his infamous Chilli Beer, created for the West Dean Chilli Fiesta. Checkout Roger Protz’s, “300 Beers You Should Try Before You Die” (Wassail) and “300 More Beers You Should Try Before You Die” (Nyewood Gold).

When Ballards sadly came to a natural end in 2017, after owner, Carola retired, Fran developed his musical interest and talents (ukulele/kazoo collection) with a spell at Chamberlains Music in Haslemere. We stayed in touch.

Then… the stars aligned!

After lockdown we were very sad when our longstanding brewery assistant, the most excellent Rich Snabel, who for 3 years had commuted to the brewery from his home in Brighton, told us that having reflected during furlough, he had decided to take a job closer to home and had a position with Bedlam Brewery. We wish him every success and happiness!

With Lockdown unlocking imminently (fingers still crossed) we needed an assistant brewer PDQ. Advertisements were placed, and we interviewed several fabulous candidates, including Fran. And now Fran’s our man!

You’ll find him in the brewhouse, serving in the shop, helping ’round the back’ and turning his hand to whatever comes up. We are a small team and its all hands on deck. He’s man of many skills, Fran. A trainee electrician and keen DIY’er, he can turn his hand to most practical projects: model trainsets, motorbike repairs etc. Basically if it needs mending, mechanical attention or building: Fran will fix it!

As well our passion for beer, we are passionate about our environment and community, charitable events and local good causes… and Fran is too. He has been an active Scout Leader for Midhurst and Easebourne Scout Group, is involved with the Midhurst Club as well as local events, such as The Fernhurst Furnace.

So here’s to an exciting new chapter in the life of Langhams.

Continued thanks to everyone who has supported us during lockdown.
Watch this space – good things will come!

We are so happy that Fran has joined the team. He’s the perfect new brewer at the brewery!

Do contact us if you’d like to say hello to any member of the Langham team.
