More about the 2023 Good Beer Guide (50th edition).

The Good Beer Guide has evolved and developed over the last 50 years and this edition is another step in its evolution.

This year we have made the Guide much more user-friendly and accessible, featuring regional entries introduced by the award-winning writer of 50 Years of CAMRA, Laura Hadland, and bringing together pub and brewery information for the first time, making it easier to find your new favourite local ale.

 The foreword for this anniversary edition has been written by HRH The Prince of Wales.

Writing for CAMRA Laura Hadland has shown that she has developed and gained invaluable insight understanding and appreciation of the CAMRA members and volunteers and their place in the beer landscape of the UK. We are delighted to have her on board again for this special anniversary Good Beer Guide.

Our new conical fermenters. Flat bottoms are out… conicals are in!

Please give a very warm welcome to our new conical fermenters, which were installed in the brewery last Friday.

Fiona, Freda and Fatima (our old fermenters) said goodbye to their corner of the brewery last week, and have been replaced by three beautiful, shiny conicals, who are named… wait for it: Fiona, Freda and Fatima.

Our new fermenters will help with our brewing process as the conical shape prevents sedimentation; their cone-shaped bottoms allow you to open the valve at the bottom of the fermentation vessel, which reduces the amount of sediment.
In addition to preventing beer from oxidizing by reducing trub (mix of protein and yeast that settles at the bottom of fermenters) and because of the hop port, conicals are ideal for a hoppier beer style.

And, rather excitingly, as all of our fermenters are now sealed vessels, we can begin stage 2 of our sustainability carbon capture initiative with the University of Surrey department of Chemical and Process Engineering.

What are conical fermenters (in a bit more detail)? Conical fermenters have a cone-shaped bottom with a valve at the point of the cone, instead of the flat bottom of a bucket or carboy. Solids collect in the cone and the valve makes for simple, sanitary removal of trub and yeast for disposal or repitching.

Join the team in the Tap: work at our Sussex Brewery this festive season. We’re in need of part time Taproom and Events assistants. Please come and work with us!

We are looking for people to join our busy, independent microbrewery in the heart of the South Downs National Park.

This job requires people who are flexible in terms of working hours and who are comfortable working across a number of aspects of the business. The role is primarily based in the Taproom and there are also opportunities to be involved in our events – on and offsite – as well as potentially office support.

Working hours are available on an ad hoc basis.

Main Responsibilities
Lead the taproom operation and support the brewery administrative work.
Interact with customers, take orders, and serve pizza, snacks and drinks.
Assess customers’ needs and preferences and make recommendations.
Check customers’ identification and confirm it meets legal drinking age.
Restock and replenish bar and supplies, liaising with brewery managers.
Responsibility for maintaining hygiene standards in the taproom, including kitchen, store room,
cellar and bathroom.
Support the work of the Retail Business Manager answering phone calls etc.
Competently use the brewery software to place orders and stock keep. Training will be provided.
Work with the brewery team to deliver business targets and objectives and attend monthly
staff meeting, which may be outside of working hours.
Stay guest focused and create an excellent guest experience.

Requirements
A love of beer! Some knowledge of different beer styles.
Experience in cellaring and beer serving is a bonus but training will be provided.
Experience in hospitality and/or customer service.
Competent in Microsoft Word and Excel.
Positive attitude and excellent communication skills.
Strong team skills but able to work independently when required.
Ability to keep the tasting room organised, stocked and clean, and identify areas for improvement.
Ideally able to drive and have use of your own vehicle, but not essential.

Additional duties subject to applicant
Full UK Driving licence is a bonus should the brewery need drayman support on an ad hoc basis.

CAMRA Arun & Adur Branch’s 24th Worthing Beer & Cider Festival 2022 takes place from Friday 28th to Saturday 29th October 2022. And we’re introducing a very special beer at the event: ‘Last Bus’.

This wonderful beer has been commissioned to celebrate the life of Stuart Elms, a local CAMRA member and beer enthusiast. Stuart organised Worthing Beer Festivals, was the founder (and branch chairman) of the social ‘Bus to the Pub’ trips, bringing trade to far flung country pubs. Stuart sadly passed away over the summer, but what better way to pay homage than with this hazy, hoppy pale ale.

Stuart lived in Worthing for many years and had various interests outside work, including race walking, cycling and a love of beer. His walking exploits were quite incredible. In his younger years he set times that brought interest from the top of the sport and he competed for Great Britain many times. His cycling pleasure came later in life and as well as enjoying riding, he also campaigned for cycling related schemes to make riding safer locally. Two wheels also helped Stuart reach pubs and you’d often see him locking up his trusty steed outside a favourite watering hole. Having worked for a period for a local bus company, his knowledge of routes was extensive and he married that up with the locations of country pubs and founded a group for real ale lovers, that on a monthly basis travelled to different areas of the county to experience some gems of the rural pub landscape.

The ‘Bus to the Pub’ group visited us at Langham several times, including at our Bonkers for Conkers event. Stuart was pretty successful one year and his progress through the competition meant a bit of flap getting the bus back!

This ale, ‘Last Bus’ is a homage to Stuart, his love of ale and organiser of these wonderful social events. It’s brewed with Citra and Idaho7 giving a tropical, fruity flavour. These two hops are very notable for mango/grapefruit and citrusy flavours.

Last Bus will be launched at this weekend’s Worthing Beer Festival: 28th & 29th October at The Rooms, on the first floor of the Guildbourne Shopping Centre in the centre of Worthing.

Fri 28th Oct, 5pm – 10:30pm: £9.00
Sat 29th Oct, 11am – 9:30pm* : £7.00
